The Classroom
At Cothill, our small class sizes mean every pupil receives focused attention across a broad, traditional curriculum.
Our goal is to spark a lifelong love of learning, offering countless avenues for curiosity and excitement. Progress is closely tracked from the start, with tailored support where needed. Parents are kept informed through regular reports and meetings.
Cothill prepares pupils for many of the country’s leading senior schools, with several winning scholarships each year. Whilst we’re proud of our academic results, our greater mission remains clear: To prepare our children not just for examinations, but for life.
The Cothill Educational Journey
Years 3 & 4
Pupils typically join Cothill in Year 3, where the curriculum builds on the National Curriculum with a strong focus on English and Maths. Core lessons are taught by the class teacher, who also delivers Science and Topic, a termly theme designed to inspire curiosity and develop a broad range of skills. Specialist teachers lead subjects such as French, Music, Art, Drama, Pottery, DT, Outdoor Learning, IT, PE, and Games, depending on the class teacher’s strengths.
In Year 4, the class structure continues, with most lessons taught by the class teacher. Pupils may be grouped by ability for Maths, and Topic evolves into separate Geography and History lessons. Prep is introduced gradually during the year..
Year 5
Year 5 marks a key transition. All subjects are now taught by specialists, and pupils move between classrooms for each lesson. Form tutors, who teach one or more subjects, provide close pastoral and academic support. Reasoning lessons are introduced to develop cognitive skills and prepare for senior school assessments. The Year 5 classrooms, located in Jackson’s, offer a quieter environment away from the main teaching block. Prep becomes part of daily routine, with 30 minutes set each day.
Year 6
In Year 6, many pupils sit the ISEB Pre-Test, an online screening exam used by senior schools. Reasoning lessons continue and increase in frequency until November, after which Latin begins. Aside from Maths, classes remain mixed-ability. The Common Entrance Science syllabus begins in the second half of the year. Form tutors continue to teach their class for at least one key subject and prep increases to 40 minutes per day.
Year 7
Year 7 is another step up, with the full Common Entrance curriculum in place across all subjects. One class may work at a quicker pace, with pupils aiming for academic scholarships. Latin continues, although new joiners or pupils not taking Latin at their senior school may opt for Classical Civilisation. Where possible, form tutors remain involved in classroom teaching for their form and pupils complete one hour of prep daily.
Year 8
Year 8 is the culmination of up to six years’ preparation. Pupils sit Common Entrance or scholarship exams, with scholarship candidates identified after Year 7 summer exams, and continue to complete one hour of prep daily. After exams, a rich post-exam programme begins, featuring academic, practical, and life skills learning alongside the Leavers’ Trip and, the grand finale of the school play.
